The Sound Professionals HP-1 custom designed monitor headphones offer pro-grade build quality and audio performance for Court Reporting and editing, professional studio-based production, location recording, DJing, podcasting, and critical daily listening.

Outfitted with 40mm large-aperture dynamic drivers and an over-ear, closed-back design, the HP-1 headphones deliver clarity, deep bass, and extended bandwidth (10 Hz to 24 kHz) while isolating you from outside sounds.

The headphones are both durable and comfortable to wear. Two detachable, single-sided cables—one coiled and one straight—are included for optimal operation.

Each cable sports a gold-plated 3.5mm mini plug for use with mobile devices and computer soundcards, and a 1/4″ screw-on adapter is included for easy hookup to professional audio interfaces, mixers, and stereo receivers. A carrying case is supplied with the HP-1 for convenient storage and transport of the headphones.

40mm Drivers – The HP-1 features 40mm large-aperture dynamic drivers with rare earth (neodymium) magnets and CCAW (copper-clad aluminum wire) voice coils for high-quality sound reproduction.

Tuned for Clarity and Deep, Accurate Bass – The drivers and headphone design work together to provide a sonic signature tuned flat for exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range along with deep, accurate bass character. With a frequency response of 10 Hz to 24 kHz, the HP-1 can reproduce a full spectrum of tones.

Over-Ear, Sound-Isolating Design – The HP-1 utilizes a circumaural design that contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments. This over-ear, closed-back style is optimal for reducing bleed and separating you from outside sounds.

Two Detachable Single-Sided Cables – To expand its versatility, the HP-1 incorporates a detachable cable design that exits from the left side. This enables convenient cable swapping and makes it easier to distinguish the different sides of the headphone. Two cables are included—a coiled cable and a straight cable – to let you choose the best cable for working in Court, editing sessions, traveling, or listening at home.

3.5mm Plug and 1/4″ Screw-On Adapter – The attached cable is terminated with a gold-plated 3.5mm TRS mini plug for easy hookup to mobile devices, MP3 players, and computer headphone jacks. A secure 1/4″ screw-on adapter is included for compatibility connectivity with audio interfaces, mixers, and dedicated headphone amplifiers. Built-in strain relief on the 3.5mm mini plug reduces the likelihood of damaging the connection if the cable is pulled.

Pro-Grade Build Quality – Thanks to the pro-grade earpad and headband materials used in the HP-1, the headphones provide increased durability and comfort while delivering enhanced audio and effective isolation.

I was mildly skeptical for the price, but I am no longer afraid after using it for about 3 or 4 days now.

It is comfortable for headphones with reasonable clamping pressure. I wear glasses and it’s comfortable *most of the time*. I say that because it may be a hit-or-miss for you. The pressure on top of the head is decent, again, for what the headset is. There’s a lot of padding, but it might take you a day or two to figure out where you need to have the band adjusted.

The actual ear-cups themselves are aluminum construction, but for whatever reason the hinge that connects the ear-cup to the actual band is plastic, and I’m unsure why. The metal adjustment band goes all the way around (I think) so durability over a long period of time, with average use, should be fine. I would not toss these in a bag regularly for mobile setups but hooked up at a computer or desk setup, should be great. The 3.5mm jack on the headphones themselves is metal; either copper or some gold-plated metal perhaps. There is a golden/orangish color to the port. Seems durable, even over a long period of time. I would still unplug both ends of the cable before packing the headset in a bag.

The sound is balanced in my opinion. There is about as much bass as any other average headset, so that should not be your buying factor. These will not blow you away in that sense. However, as for the accuracy of sound – impeccable from what I can tell. They don’t get super loud, and I’m not sure why – I’m thinking it might be my computer. I will use them in my pre-amp later to see if higher voltage will make them louder, but for watching movies or playing games, I find myself around 70% volume on average, which might not be great in all situations in case you need to go louder – there isn’t a lot of headroom. Again, this could just be my desktop 3.5mm jacks not providing enough current, perhaps a pre-amp with the 6.35mm jack would be considerably better.

The packaging was amazing for the price point. Made me feel royal somehow, with everything laid in the box nicely. The hard case is a nice
item that often is a pricey add-on. Here it is included.

They are NOT folding headphones. This was not one of my buying requirements, it was actually something being avoided by me. Folding headphones have always broken for me under average use, and SO many headphones on Amazon around this price point (and higher) are folding for some reason. Likely for mobility, but really that seems to be the only reason folding is even needed. If you’re sitting at a desk all day and never moving, avoid folding, these are a great option.

The straight cable is the usual 3.5mm AUX cable short of the fact that one side has a screw-end at the base of the plug for the 6.35mm adapter. The coiled cable is the same setup in that respect. However, I want to point out what I both like and dislike about the coil-cable. Super nice for cable-management, not having a large loop of cable lying on the desk, and it stretches very easily. I had a little bit of concern of it putting pressure on my ports, both on the headset and on the port of the device you would be using, but it doesn’t seem to put enough pressure on anything. Perhaps over a long time it could cause an issue, but I think the coiled cable is meant for a vertical, standing setup, like recording in a studio where the 6.35mm jack would likely be used, or perhaps using the headphones while walking and the 3.5mm is being used with a phone (if you’re lucky enough to have remembered your dongle, or have a phone with the headphone jack lol).

Summary: They are comfortable even if you wear glasses, great durability and construction, decent sound for monitoring, average bass, like the cables, nice packaging.

I am thrilled and glad to have gotten such solid headphones for such a low price. Wears very well, individually and stably adjustable. 1/4″ adapter is included, metal bracket + a high-quality case and coiled cable to prevent cable clutter.

I’m really excited and the sound is very good.
Frequency range: 12 – 24,000 Hz is not the most sensitive, but anyone looking in this price segment is more likely to look for something in this range. And the headphones are really recommended for that!

Sound quality is the priority for me, so this was a win. Also, they cover the whole ear with room to spare, and fit snug and comfortably. The hard case protects them for traveling because I use them for in-person depositions as well as Zoom.

I am very pleased! Very clear and very neutral reproduction!

I’m not a sound professional and have used several different headphones from Sennheiser, Technics and Beyerdynamic for music and video over the past few years.

I bought this as a headset replacement with a V-Moda Boom Pro. It doesn’t have a proprietary jack plug, which I find very good. With others, for example Audio Technica’s, the V-Moda did not fit and was then too long with an adapter.

In terms of design and basic quality, the headphones remind me of an Audio Technica m50x. or Shure SRH440A

The pads are a bit soft for me, personally. I still had no problems and the comfort was fine. The equipment is very good for the price, ie 2 x cables, extra pads and bag.

But what is really really good is the neutral reproduction. Detailed imaging over the entire extended frequency range with precise bass response This is of course a personal opinion. But I use it for videos and music now.

For the price a very clear purchase recommendation!

I mainly use the headphones for watching movies and listening to music. I am completely satisfied with the workmanship and the wearing comfort. It shields external noise well and can be worn for a long time without discomfort. The equipment with 2 cables to change and the changeable pads is great – but I haven’t done that yet. And there’s a sturdy black plastic hard case that also offers good protection.

The bass gives you a nice fullness and depth of sound and you can hear the individual tones quite well – it’s not muddy sound. Otherwise, the sound is somewhat thinned out in the mids and with highs that are not too present. Nevertheless, it seems to reproduce the sound reasonably neutrally, because compared to the AKG K271 MK 2, which are described as very sound-neutral and which I also ordered for comparison, I didn’t really notice any relevant difference except for the bass.

Conclusion: For this price, you get a good sound and excellent equipment.

Pro’s: – Packaging is top notch, comes with a durable case that should protect these in almost any situation.
    – Solid build, these are definitely made to last.

Con’s: – These things are heavy (10 oz), not sure how long I could use these at a time before my neck and head started to
hurt from the weight of them.
    – It might be because they are so new, but these seem tighter on my head than headphones I’ve used in the
past. With regular usage they may loosen up, but people with larger heads may not find them to be
    comfortable.

Sound quality on these are pretty good, a little bassier than I would like, but depending on what you are listening to, it might not be noticeable. These aren’t advertised as “noise cancelling”, but they definitely do a good job of keeping outside noise out, with the over the ear design that covers the entire ear. I have my window open and my neighbor is mowing the lawn, and it is barely noticeable. All in all, these are a pretty solid pair of headphones. I don’t know if they will be my “everyday” headphones because of the weight of them, and how tight they are, but I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a good, quality pair of headphones.

    Sound Pro tech response:

    Thank you for your comments!

Regarding the weight, yes, these weigh 10oz – consistent with full-size studio headphones and exactly the same weight as the Audio Technica M50. Definitely, not a ‘light weight’ set of headphones. They will definitely loosen up a bit as you wear them, so they will become more comfortable.

    Thank you!

I needed a replacement for my old reliable but slowly disintegrating Sony studio headphones, so the SP-HP1s arrived at the right time. Overall, they’re a worthy successor: crisp but without any harshness on the highs, and good isolation from outside sounds; maybe a bit boomier than I’m used to, possibly because of the deeper ear cups, but nothing extreme. At first I was worried that they felt a bit tight (I have a pretty wide head), but after spending a couple of hours editing with them on, I almost forgot I was wearing them, so that worked out well.

tl;dr: Not everyday listening headphones, but they’re not meant to be. If you want headphones for precise sound editing, these fit the bill nicely.

Finally had some time to sit down and write my thoughts on these. Overall, I like them a lot. They came quickly from Sound Professionals. Well packaged in a nice box. They come with a custom, semi-hard case for storage. Nice touch having both a very long straight cable, as well as a standard coil style for shorter distances. They are very solid and feel well built, as you would expect in any quality headphone. Ear-pieces horizontally swivel (a feature I do not use often) as well as flip 180º vertically (Similar to a Sony MDR-7506. This is a feature which I do use). Everything is very well padded. It is a firmer padding, which I tend to favor. Performance:

I have been using the Sony MDR-7506 now for almost 20 years. I had them when I was a touring sound-man and have always stuck with them. I always liked that you could order certain parts for repair if needed. In any case, I am very familiar with them, and that is what I am using for comparison with the Sound Professionals SP-HP1.

One of the reasons that the MDR-7506 does so well in mix situations is that it actually is light on bass response. IME it allows to feel the bass in the room, rather than rely on the headphones. For live music situations, I would still pick the MDR-7506 over the SP-HP1.

For mastering recordings on the other hand, I would have to go with the SP-HP1. Sometimes I find my recordings bass heavy after mastering with the MDR-7506. For the same reasons it shines as a live mix headphone, it is handicapped a bit in mastering. With the Sony, I sometimes find a mastered recording might be a bit bass heavy because I overly compensated. But with the SP-HP1, I felt that the finished product sounded more like I expected when listening back in a car or home stereo. I did find the Sony’s to be a bit more detailed, but that also be due to the built in lower bass response.

For pleasure listening, I think it may depend on what I am listening to. For acoustic or jazz music I think I would likely reach for my Sony’s, but for louder amplified stuff, I think I will be reaching for the Sound Professionals. Time will tell on that one.

Overall I think that these are very good headphones, and are certainly versatile enough to be the only pair you own.

But for $149.99 I certainly would not be disappointed with these.

The headphones are of very good quality. They are comfortable and come with two long cords and a nice carrying case, which an appreciated. I am very happy with my purchase

I am using my new headphones for broadcast captioning. Comfortable and do not slip or fall off my head. Sound is focused.
